The Parc de la Faisanderie (Pheasant Park) was once part of the Château Park, with formal gardens designed by Le Nôtre and kitchen gardens that provided the Princes of Condé with their fresh produce. It was sold off during the French Revolution, and remained hidden from the public until 2002, when it was purchased by the Musée Vivant du Cheval and reopened as La Potager des Princes. It’s strange to walk out of the town center right into the middle of these tranquil gardens, with sweeping views over a lake and the carefully planted beds of flowers and herbs, trained fruit trees and vegetable plots. Kids love the farmyard, with its chickens, ducks, goats and rabbits. Events in the park include live classical musical performances and a spring Chick&Egg Festival for kids. It’s still a “work in progress,” with plans for an educational garden museum and open-air theater.
